Project Details

Fleet Pond is Hampshire’s largest freshwater lake, comprising 52 acres set in a nature reserve of 141 acres. The Fleet Pond Society works alongside Hart Council’s Countryside Service to protect it. They have an ongoing fundraising programme and volunteering weekends to ensure that the area continues to provide a sanctuary for diverse wildlife, and remains a popular beauty spot for the community to relax in and enjoy. However, in some ways, it has become a victim of its own success. Heavy traffic means that pathways are now in urgent need of repair and must be brought up to standard so that visitors stay on the pathways and don’t inadvertently destroy flora and fauna. An It’s Your Community award will buy the materials (gravel, timber, shuttering, and timber stakes), to create a new path linking to the end of an existing boardwalk. With the new pathways in place the community will continue to benefit from the beauty of Fleet Pond, whilst protecting the woodland and reserve.

Project Updates

  • 03/07/2009 Before and after shots of the path added; a reminder of the transformation made in 1 day.
  • 22/05/2009 What a fantastic day; a team of 16 O2 volunteers completed the path (approximately 100m in length) on Thursday 21 May. Despite it being a rather warm day for completing such a task, by lunchtime the path edges were completed with the gravel layer starting to be laid; great team work! During its construction, many visitors and dog walkers complimented on the path and thanked all of us for improving the pathways. It was extremely satisfying knowing that the new path would preserve the flora and fauna.
  • 12/05/2009 The date is set; the materials ordered and a small team of volunteers are ready to build the new path ahead of the Bank Holiday weekend.
