Project Details

The Friends of Hoyland Low intend to renovate the only remaining landmark in the area called the Lowe Stand, the remains of a 17th Century hunting lodge. The Lowe is one of the highest points in East Yorkshire - from it one can see Yorkminster in the distance, and it is a monument well loved by local people. When the local council made known its plans to sell off the Lowe, a petition intending to stop the sale was sent out and signed by over 1800 people. This part of Yorkshire was one of those that suffered from mining closures in the 1980s, so restoring the ancient monument could also go a long way to restoring community pride. The tidied up hunting lodge, with a steel stair case installed could be a fantastic local view point and community amenity area, so this It’s Your Community award will get the ball rolling.

Project Updates

  • 17/03/2009 The project and the team behind it has grown considerably since the award was made. The money has allowed us to progress a long way - we are now in feasibility stage for the restoration of the Lowe Stand, following many hurdles including agreement with the council on lease terms (nearing completion) and access paths with local landowners / farmers for maintenance of the site (which is only accessible by footpath at the moment) and many others. The group itself has groiwn in numbers, skills and in action momentum raising awareness through gala attendance, sponsorship (calendars, banners etc), leaflet printing and distribution, many meetings with the councils and trying to get the press interested. Now have a website www.lowe-stand.org.uk showing how the Friends group is working hard to generate funds and interest.
