Project Details

Friends of Our Valley’s Seed and Bulb Trail project would involve the planting of native wild bulbs and seeds along the pathways that run throughout the Goyt valley. The bulbs and seeds would be planted by volunteers from the local community with help of other locally established groups. Volunteers will package the seeds and bulbs into envelopes, which will be colour coded to correspond with an accessible map indicating ideal habitats for each plant along the valleys pathways. Then there will be a series of bulb and seed planting days, where different groups will be provided the colour coded envelopes and sent out in groups to spread the seeds in their respective ideal habitats. The project will actively involve the local community in creating a more attractive and bio-diverse environment. The Seed and Bulb Trail will create a fantastic spring spectacle that will attract more people to use and appreciate the valley, and will further community cohesion by actively involving the whole community. Their £500 It’s Your Community award will get the project up and running.

Project Updates

  • 20/11/2009 Our project successfully involved our community in its local green space and has helped to create links with other local groups and projects. As a direct result of the task day our group has gained members and volunteers with specialist skills who want to help us further enhance our valley. By using mainly seeds, to limit heavy digging, we ensured that all members of the public could take part in Our Seed and Bulb Trail. Many volunteers are becoming quite attentive over the particular areas that they helped to seed and plant and are regularly checking the seeded areas for signs of germination. We are all looking forward to spring - when our Seed and Bulb Trail should begin to show. We have a maintenance regime planed for the coming year - where we will collect the wildflower seeds to boost natural germination and ensure that our project will have a visual impact for years to come. Our Seed and Bulb Trail is a small project with a big impact. We received more than enough volunteers to complete the project - despite the torrential rain on the task days! The Seed and Bulb Trail involved and inspired our community, giving us the confidence and enthusiasm to believe in our potential to make a positive impact on our environment, helping us to develop and grow as a group and as a community.
