This is a fantastic example of what can be achieved by initiative and community spirit! A local organisation in Birmingham has been given part of a building, rent-free, to use as a youth centre. They want to provide recreational activities, homework clubs, support services and so on, and have made a great start by securing a sizeable grant from Birmingham City Council. They will use that money to purchase recreational equipment, play stations and other fun activities, which will attract the kids and provide them place for socialising, away from the temptations of crime and anti-social behaviour. Once fully up and running, the intention is to set up homework/educational support with ICT terminals and internet facilities. But before all of those worthwhile aims can be achieved, they need to get the toilet blocks in order. This may not sound very glamorous but it is obviously an essential necessity that must be addressed first. The funding from It’s Your Community will enable them to get the project going and help to create a Youth Centre with amenities they can be proud of.
