Project Details

Barnsley BSAC Divers are a scuba diving club introducing the exciting art of diving to beginners. The club hires its equipment to learners (at a cost only basis) so they can “try dives” and gradually build up diving skills. Scuba diving is a challenging sport which demands self-control combined with consideration, care and a good appreciation of health and safety with basic first aid skills. It does not demand strength, aggression, extreme fitness or excellent vision, though it does encourage people to aim for a good standard of fitness. It is an exciting and demanding sport which is attractive to many people, whatever their level of education and ability. However, scuba diving requires relatively expensive and well maintained equipment. A full set of equipment for diving in the UK costs anything from £1500 upwards. So, although it is a sport that appeals to many people, many people do not have the means to experience it or try it out. The club would like to extend its remit to include more apprentice divers, but to do that they need more equipment. Its Your Community will fund the purchase of 3 more sets of regulators and at least 2 additional Buoyancy Control Devices so more people in South Yorkshire can enjoy this fantastic sport.

Project Updates

  • 01/08/2008 Our club has really benefited from our O2 award and the associated publicity. We have had an increase in members of all types (young teenagers to pensioners) and offers of help from people running Dive businesses (most recently a free night playing with sea scooters courtesy of John Camm, Alpdad). The extra equipment which our grant enabled us to get (3 BCDs and 3 sets of regulators) has been invaluable in helping us cope with the increased demand. We are now able to lend more members good quality equipment so they can go diving and continue their training (in case you don't know scuba equipment is expensive so unless you have a good income or can borrow the equipment it can be impossible to take part in this hobby.
