Mangravet & Harmony Community Project

Mangravet & Harmony Community Project

  • Location: Kent
  • Project Type: Cultural Community
  • Area: South East
  • Awarded: £1000
  • Status: In Progress

Project Details

This was an action based initiative inspired by one man - John Kingdom, who felt the residents of the Mangravet and Harmony estate, especially it's young people had been badly let down by lack of facilities. He turned an abandoned hall into a theatre for singing, dancing and acting sessions and now others on the estate have been fired with the same enthusiasm. It's Your Community has enabled them to buy equipment for a safe children's play area, and to set up a place for young people to meet. The words 'not possible' are no longer part of this estate's vocabulary!

Project Updates

  • 09/10/2008 Harmony is a voluntary based fully integrated performing arts group, specialising in after school activities for the disadvantaged and all others that can care and share in the community. Founder member John Kingdon, with help from dedicated volunteers turned an abandoned hall on the Mangravet estate in Maidstone into a theatre for singing, dancing and acting sessions. With help from It’s Your Community, Harmony has also been able to add dressing rooms to the benefits of the mini theatre, this has made a tremendous difference to the group. Harmony is also involved with a project to eventually buy equipment and build a children’s safe play area, this to has been supported by It’s You Community. The first part of the project is to supply a seating area for young people to meet. The design will be taken from ideas given by young people on the estate. The words 'not possible' are no longer part of this estate's vocabulary!
